Supported Decision-making is a natural process that many people use when making important decisions. It is “what really good family and friends do. It’s having conversations with each other about needs and wants and coming to a decision with their help when needed. Supported Decision-making is a set of strategies that can help individuals with disabilities have more control over their lives and their futures. It involves family and friends working together with individuals to support them in making complex decisions.”

Individuals with disabilities choose the people they trust to help them understand complex information and make informed decisions about their medical, legal, financial, and other life matters. It’s how most people make decisions (Source: The Arc of Colorado).

While Supported Decision-making is a tool that is legally recognized as an alternative or addition to guardianship in the state of Colorado for persons with disabilities, it reflects how many people make decisions in everyday life. Many people rely on friends and family for support when making important decisions!
