Annual Film Festival Inspires Community to Better Culture for People with Disabilities

The Arc Pikes Peak Region invites the community to Join the Dance and celebrate the accomplishments of individuals of varying abilities through its 6th Annual Achieve with Us Colorado Film Festival: Join the Dance, Friday, March 23, 2018, at Stargazers Theatre. Showtimes at 2 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. are FREE and open to the public. The call to Join the Dance is part of The Arc PPR’s efforts to introduce the community to its work and an invitation to consider partnering with the nonprofit in its capital campaign, Building for Change.

I see Join the Dance as an opportunity for people who are not familiar with The Arc PPR and the people we support to open their minds and hearts to the vast amount of potential the Building for Change Inclusive Campus will bring to our community,” Christina Butero, guardianship coordinator at The Arc PPR said. “The possibilities are endless for the community to experience the passion, drive, pride and joy of the people we support in our services. Joining our dance makes us all one step closer to an accepting community.

6th Annual Achieve with Us Colorado Film Festival: Join the Dance - Friday, March 23, 2018, FREE Showtimes at 2 pm & 8:30 pm, Stargazers TheatreThis year’s Film Festival’s powerful short films include Freefall, a film that highlights the only dance company in the UK comprised of people with learning disabilities, and Here with Me, an insightful film about a family who sells everything to move to the jungle in order to make their daughter with severe autism happy. I am Alive celebrates the emotional journey of the human experience.

The stories portrayed in this year’s film selection mirror what The Arc PPR hopes to accomplish through Building for Change, a (in progress) 100% accessible inclusive campus that offers people of all abilities the resources they need to thrive in their communities, making their dreams and goals a reality (such as a new: computer lab, kitchen, library, critical life-skills training, community garden, and many other unique services).

To ‘Join the Dance’ means to be a part of something beyond the world of disabilities. People with I/DD sometimes live in a ‘bubble’ of services and supports only. They have no life outside of what is paid for or required by the funding source,” Danna Snedden, guardianship specialist at The Arc PPR explained. “So, when I hear ‘Join the Dance,’ I think of engaging these individuals in a meaningful life where disabilities are not the focus.

We hope that these films give people reason and inspiration to support our cause, to ‘Join our Dance,” Craig Severa, film curator and advocacy coordinator at The Arc PPR said. “We are changing the culture for the better for people with I/DD.

The Arc Pikes Peak Region would like to thank the sponsors of the 6th Annual Achieve with Us Film Festival: Join the Dance. Thank you for “Joining the Dance,” to help us make our vision of a community where all individuals are embraced and respected a reality!
