Action Alert: Help Break Barriers to Employment for Individuals with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities

Urge the Senate Finance Committee to Support SB16-077 by February 15!

Background:

It is estimated that 80 percent of individuals with disabilities are not working. People with disabilities often face barriers to “real work for real pay,” and they deserve the opportunity to seek viable work.

SB16-077, sponsored by Sen. John Kefalas, will charge an already-existing state stakeholder group to develop and recommend comprehensive solutions to employment barriers for people with disabilities, including people with the most significant disabilities. Additionally, the group’s work will develop and recommend solutions to ensure that students with disabilities can transition from high school having obtained a job and/or acceptance to secondary education.

How you can make a difference:

Contact members of the Senate Finance Committee today, and urge them to vote “yes” on SB16-077! The committeeSupport Employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities meets on February 16 – please contact them by February 15 to make your voice heard! (See contact info below.)

What you could say:

  • Please vote “yes” on the Senate Bill 16-077 strike-below amendment L.001
  • Working in a competitive integrated job enables people with disabilities to contribute to the tax base, become part of the community and rely less on government assistance.
  • Individuals with disabilities need to have the opportunity to transition from high school into jobs that pay a fair wage or into post-secondary education.
  • Implementing “Employment First Policy” may protect Colorado from corrective action from The U.S. Department of Justice or other litigation.
