The Advocacy Program safeguards the rights of individuals with mental retardation, facilitates choices, and promotes independence and inclusion in community life. Advocacy takes place at both the individual and system levels.
For individuals, The Arc provides advocates, who upon request, will attend school staffings, residential and/or day program staffings, provide crisis intervention, all to protect the rights of people with mental retardation. Limited emergency financial assistance is available to meet individual needs.
System advocacy includes gathering information about local programs and monitoring them to assure services meet identified needs and are consistent with laws, regulations, and standards of quality. System advocacy also monitors public policy and legislation at state and federal levels.
