Gail Ireland Arc Pikes Peak Region GemOur 49th gem is Gail Ireland (1895-1988). Gail was a Denver based attorney who took on the case of a defendant who no one cared about or valued as a human being. This defendant was Joe Arridy, a man with developmental disabilities, who was wrongly accused of murder after being picked up for vagrancy in the train yard in Cheyenne, Wy.

Joe was then accused of a sensational murder of a young woman named Dorothy Drain. Gail worked tirelessly without compensation on this case and was able to see Joe through 9 stays of execution. Gail later went on to become the Colorado State Attorney General. Today, Gail is emerging as a role model for citizen’s lawyers and advocates of the 21st century.
